Self-Care | Lisa Moussa, RN, BSN

Entrepreneurship is a rewarding but demanding journey that requires a high level of focus, productivity, and resilience. As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of building and growing a business, often neglecting our own well-being in the process. However, taking care of ourselves is crucial to our long-term success as entrepreneurs. One powerful tool that can help busy entrepreneurs find balance and improve their well-being is meditation, which is a form of self-care that can be easily incorporated into a busy schedule.

Meditation, a practice that has been around for centuries, involves training the mind to focus and calm the thoughts, leading to a state of deep relaxation and increased self-awareness. It can be done in various forms, such as mindfulness meditation, loving-kindness meditation, or body scan meditation, among others. Regardless of the type, meditation can have numerous benefits for entrepreneurs, including reduced stress, improved focus and concentration, increased creativity, enhanced emotional intelligence, and better overall mental and physical health.

Starting a meditation practice as a busy entrepreneur may seem daunting, but it’s not as complicated as it may sound. Here are some practical tips to help you begin your meditation journey and incorporate it into your busy schedule:

  • 1. Start Small: Begin with just a few minutes of meditation each day. You don’t need to meditate for hours on end to reap the benefits. Even five minutes of meditation can make a difference. As an entrepreneur, you can easily fit in a short meditation session during your morning routine, a mid-day break, or before bed.
  • 2. Create a Calm Environment: Find a quiet and comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. It could be a corner in your office, a cozy spot at home, or even a park nearby. Consider using props like a cushion or a blanket to make your meditation space more inviting and comfortable.
  • 3. Use Guided Meditations: If you’re new to meditation, using guided meditation apps or recordings can be helpful. They provide step-by-step instructions and can help you stay focused. There are plenty of meditation apps available, such as Calm, Headspace, and Insight Timer, which offer guided meditations for different purposes, including stress reduction, focus, and relaxation.
  • 4. Be Patient with Yourself: Meditation is a skill that requires practice, and it’s normal to have thoughts and distractions during your practice. Don’t get discouraged if you find it challenging at first. Be patient with yourself and keep coming back to your breath or chosen point of focus.
  • 5. Make it a Habit: Consistency is key to making meditation a part of your self-care routine. Set a regular time for your meditation practice, and try to stick to it as much as possible. Consider adding it to your daily schedule or setting reminders to help you stay accountable.
  • 6. Combine Meditation with Other Self-Care Practices: Meditation can be even more effective when combined with other self-care practices. Consider incorporating healthy habits such as exercise, proper nutrition, and enough sleep into your routine. Taking care of your physical health can have a positive impact on your mental well-being, which can further enhance the benefits of meditation.
  • 7. Experiment with Different Types of Meditation: There are various types of meditation, and not all may resonate with you. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. You may prefer mindfulness meditation, where you focus on your breath and bring awareness to the present moment, or loving-kindness meditation, where you cultivate compassion towards yourself and others. Trying different approaches can help you find the one that suits you best.

In conclusion, as a busy entrepreneur, it’s crucial to prioritize self-care and well-being to achieve long-term success.
